El Cirum Farm Stay in Arabba – authenticity and nature in the heart of the Dolomites

A farmhouse among the meadows of Arabba, where rural tradition meets mountain hospitality

The farm stay “El Cirum” consists of a farmhouse, a barn, and 17 hectares of pasture meadows, located in the areas of Coste and Pralongià, on the slopes of Mount Cherz.
The farmhouse is located in Grone di Masarei, facing the austere Mount Aurone, in an enviable position as in winter it receives the first sunlight that enters the Fodom valley in the morning.
It is accessed via the road that leads from the Dolomites State Road 48 to the hamlet of Cherz. The barn, instead, is located in Masarei, 50 meters from our facility.

The choice to combine the agricultural activity with tourist hospitality was driven by the desire to respond to growing work needs, as well as to share our history and culture, with the aim of making them known and appreciated.
To those who choose El Cirum to spend their holidays in these incomparable mountains, we offer everything authentic that our land and its traditions make us love and respect every day: simplicity, tranquility, and the greatness of nature.

The heart of the El Cirum Farm

Among pastures, mountain huts, and alpine meadows: the rural tradition that gives life to our milk

The main activity of our farm is the breeding of dairy cows. It is a hard and seemingly simple activity. Breeding cows actually involves a whole series of complementary tasks, the most important of which is hay harvesting.

During the three summer months, when the cows are in the mountain hut for free grazing in the high mountains, the hay is collected, which will be used to feed the animals throughout the rest of the year in our new barn in Masarei.
The care, cleaning, and feeding of the animals, as well as the care of the meadows that provide the hay, and the collection of the milk twice a day, fill the days of us mountain farmers. It is a job that, while keeping us constantly in contact with nature and with the extreme beauty of our mountains, evolves with time.

Hay harvesting begins in June in the meadows surrounding the farmhouse, where grass of first quality can be collected. It then continues in August in the higher meadows of Coste and Pralongià, which provide grass of even superior quality, rich and full of nutrients. Finally, the second cut of the meadows around the farmhouse takes place at the end of summer.
By mixing the three types of dried grass, the cows will have highly nutritious food, capable of giving them everything they need to produce milk of the highest quality.

Some pictures can help convey the reality in which El Cirum is immersed…!

The work of the mountain farmer – life, tradition, and modernity among the mountains of Arabba

From the Cherz mountain hut to the meadows of Pralongià: the rhythm of the mountains that guides our work every day

Our work as farmers is deeply connected to the mountains, their landscapes, and the activities carried out there. From the summer mountain pasture to the high-altitude meadows of Coste and Pralongià, and from traditional structures to modern equipment, each element tells part of our story. It is a journey shaped by tradition, hard work, and continuous adaptation to changing times.

The mountain hut

This is Malga Cherz, where we local breeders bring our cows during the summer season for grazing in the high mountains. It is located on a splendid plateau between Settsass, Pralongià, and Col di Lana.

The Fodom Valley – Authentic Ladin land among the Dolomites

Between Col di Lana and the Sella Group: a valley rich in history, nature, and living traditions

It is one of the four Ladin valleys that open at the foot of the Sella Group. It extends along the SS 48 of the Dolomites from west to east for about a dozen kilometers between Arabba and the junction toward the Falzarego Pass.
It is crossed by the Cordevole river, which descends from Pordoi toward Lake Alleghe. In the distance, Mount Civetta and Mount Pelmo can be admired.
It preserves authentic features under the attentive and history-rich gaze of Col di Lana.

Col di Lana

Col di Lana is for the entire valley of Pieve di Livinallongo an authentic open-air monument.

It represents our history, marking the deepest roots with our ancestors who lost their lives there during the Great War, and bears witness to a wound that affected our families and those of our grandparents and great-grandparents. At the outbreak of the First World War, our territory did not belong to the Kingdom of Italy but to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Ladin people were therefore sent to fight in Russia as early as 1914, before the Italian front opened the following year. The valley, crossed by the front line, suffered almost total destruction, and the populations were evacuated, returning only after the defeat at Caporetto (October 23–24, 1917). These were terrible events that marked entire generations.

Today, our territory is rich in museums and testimonies about that period of history and the growth of our Ladin identity.
Col di Lana is considered a place for reflection.
Once its summit is reached, one can enjoy a marvelous spectacle.

The Pelmo

Mount Pelmo dominates the horizon seen from El Cirum towards the east. It is a magnificent mountain, whose peak reaches 3,154 meters in height, and seems to rise alone like a throne. Perhaps for this characteristic it has been given the nickname "Caregon del Padre Eterno," meaning literally the “armchair of God.”

The Dolomite rock of Pelmo takes on a variety of colors, reflecting the sunlight—from the reds of sunset to the whites of the early morning hours, and even turning dark when a storm threatens. For us, Pelmo is an infallible weather indicator and helps us navigate the unpredictability typical of our climate and conditions. When the massif stands clearly against the blue sky, we confidently enjoy stable, good weather. When, instead, the first little clouds begin to wrap around the summit (“l câpel”), it is a sign of a possible rapid change.

The dairy

The “Latteria di Livinallongo” is the heart of the farming members of our valley. Here all the milk produced is processed.
From this processing come butter and various types of cheeses, from fresh to aged ones; among these, two stand out in particular in the sales counter: Zigher, a traditional and very tasty cheese with chives, and Ciof da mont, a cheese produced only with milk milked in the mountain hut.
We are particularly proud of this product, as it has been recognized with the “Slow Food” designation.

The Feast of Santa Maria Majou

The Feast of Santa Maria Majou is celebrated every year on August 15th, and the entire valley participates. Women and young girls, dressed in traditional attire, carry baskets and bouquets of brightly colored flowers to the church, to the Madonna.
During the Holy Mass, these are blessed and then taken back to their own barns, placed on the hay as a sign of gratitude.
